Time to hit the road again...

Waktunya "MENGHILANG" lagi nih..., sekali ini gue akan pergi ke Wanariset Samboja,
berikut keterangannya :
Wanariset Samboja Orangutan Rehabilitation & Reintroduction Center is in East Kalimantan, Borneo. The primary function for the staff at the Wanariset Centre is the enforcement of existing Indonesian wildlife laws. The majority of that effort is aimed at the confiscation, rehabilitation, reintroduction, and post-release monitoring of illegally held orangutans, as well as the translocation of orangutans that are in direct conflict with humans. The staff of the Center has been responsible for the successful reintroduction of over 200 individual orangutans, and is currently in the process of preparing approximately 300 others for reintroduction into protected areas of forest. Overwhelmingly, the orangutans at the Center arrive as infants or very young juveniles. These individuals rarely have normal physical or behavioural development, and are usually in need of medical care as well. Once good health is restored, behavioural rehabilitation focuses on exposure to appropriate socialization, advancement of physical strength and associated locomotor abilities, and development of survival skills such as foraging, nest building, and problem solving.

WORP facilities include operational headquarters, forest reintroduction sites, and an international network of fund-raisers and advisors.

Wanariset. ORP headquarters are located at Wanariset, a forestry research station operated jointly by the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry and Estate Crops (MOFEC) and the Tropenbos Foundation of the Netherlands since 1987. Wanariset?s aim is to contribute to the conservation and wise use of tropical rain forests through applied research. The Wanariset station is located 38 km north of the city of Balikpapan. It comprises 3,504 hectares of experimental forest, botanical facilities (e.g., herbarium, green house, nursery, laboratory), research library, office and educational centers, and orangutan rehabilitation headquarters. ORP is headquartered at Wanariset because Tropenbos was its major administrative/financial sponsor before ORP became fully independent in 1999. ORP facilities at Wanariset include a veterinary clinic, quarantine, group and individual housing for healthy orangutans, special infant care facilities, and special housing for orangutans who are maimed or infected with contagious diseases.

The halfway house forest is a 10 hectare block of forest enriched with local fruit trees, located about 7 km from Wanariset. In 1999, ORP secured permission to use this block as a practice forest where infant orangutans can develop basic forest skills before being released to full freedom in a large forest. The halfway house training program has been operating on a trial basis since April, 2000.

Sungai Wain Forest is a water catchment forest with Protection Forest status (hutan lindung) located about 25 km south of Wanariset. Wild orangutans have been absent from this forest since at least 1938. The area officially protected consists of 9,783 ha (about 25,000 acres) of lowland mixed dipterocarp rainforest with extensive swamp areas in the southern part. Around the protected areas of Sungai Wain forest lie another 10,000 ha of logged-over forest and swamp. The forest is bounded on the south by a canal, reservoir, and fencing; on the north by an uninhabited INHUTANI I concession; on the west by the bay of Balikpapan; and on the east by farmland and the main Balikpapan-Samarinda highway (Smits et al., 1994). Despite its protection status and its importance as a water catchment area for the city of Balikpapan, the forest has suffered considerable encroachment from adjacent human settlements and in addition fires early in 1998 destroyed about 50% of the remaining good forest so that by mid 1998, only about 3500 ha of good forest remained. Sungai Wain still supports the community of orangutans reintroduced into the forest by ORP between 1992 and 1997. ORP continues to support this community through monitoring, patrols, and any additional support needed by individual orangutans.

The Meratus (Beratus) forest block is a larger, more remote area of state forest land covered by lowland to hill rainforest with some swamp. It lies some 30 km NW of Sungai Wain. Its center has Protection Forest status (hutan lindung) but it was affected by logging incursions from the timber concessions that surround it until 1993. Its periphery is logged-over and has been abandoned by the concessionaires. On one side it borders on the ITCI timber production concession area. The nearest human settlement is 50 km away. No wild orangutans have ever been reported to range in the forests of southeast Kalimantan, although the reasons for their absence are not clear because the habitat resembles that of adjacent areas that do support wild orangutan populations. In ecological terms, the Meratus forest-block is part of the hill and mountain rainforest covering the Pegunungan Meratus region and the contiguous forest cover of the adjacent concessions. MOFEC accorded 1,200 km2 of this forest block to the orangutan reintroduction project with Protection Forest status. The area allocated is covered with good quality lowland and hill forest. It offers excellent habitat for orangutans although much of it is between 500 m and 1200 m above sea level, elevations at which permanent wild orangutan populations are very rarely found. ORP has used the Meratus forest block as its main reintroduction forest for ex-captive orangutans since 1997.
